Good teaching practice is a key influence on student learning - a desired outcome and primary goal of higher educational institutions. Teachers strive to meet the principles of good practice in an effort to provide the best learning experience for their students University. Student Teaching is the most important experience in teacher education programme and is generally based on a country’s National Education policy. Teaching practice is a compulsory course for all aspiring student teachers registered in a teacher preparation programme in Nigeria. It is one-semester in duration; usually lasting from the beginning to the end of the First Semester of the final year of students’ training. During this period, most programmers focus on:

  • Instructional planning
  • Instructional technology
  • Micro-teaching mentoring
  • Studies in teaching methods
  • Posting of students to schools where they can practice their materialDuring Teaching Practice
Objectives of Teaching Practice:-
  • Quality Based education.
  • Field experience in schools.
  • To equip with competencies and skills.
  • To Develop professional capacities.
  • To develop positive attitude to schooling and teaching.
  • To observe the classroom teaching of regular teachers.
  • To organize innovative and co-curricular activities in schools.
  • To understand the school environment.
Procedures:-
EPC-3.1 School Internship Programme

The 16-week internship is divided into three phases:

Phase 1: Pre-Practice:-
  • Duration: 2 weeks (at the parent institute)

  • Activities:

    • Student teachers learn to write and demonstrate micro, macro, diary, ICT, test-based, and teaching model-based lesson plans.
    • Engage in one week of simulated teaching practice in each teaching subject.
    • Participate in a workshop on developing audio-visual aids.
    • Attend orientation programs for mentor teachers and heads of selected schools.
Phase 2: Teaching Practice:-
  • Duration: 14 weeks

  • Structure:

    • Divided into two 7-week blocks. In the first block, student teachers teach upper primary or secondary classes; in the second block, they switch.
    • With permission from higher authorities (DGSE, DEO, school principals), small groups of student teachers are attached to schools.
    • Each student teacher teaches a minimum of 60 lessons in each pedagogic subject under the supervision of mentor teachers and teacher educators.
  • Nomination of Mentor Teachers:

    Records to be Submitted by Pupil Teachers:
    • Teaching practice file (for both teaching subjects)
    • Assessment record
    • Record of participation in and organization of school activities
Phase 3: Post-Practice and Evaluation
  • Duration: 1 week

  • Activities:

    • Presentation of a brief report by each student teacher on internship experiences.
    • Inviting feedback from cooperating schools.
    • Evaluation (Total: 300 marks):
      • Assessment by school mentor teacher and teacher educator: 40 marks (20 per subject)
      • Internal assessment based on submitted records and discussion lessons: 60 marks (30 per subject)
      • External assessment: Final skill-in-teaching lesson in each subject conducted at the parent college (200 marks, 100 per subject) under the supervision of the university-appointed external Internship Programme Coordinator.
  • Breakdown of External Evaluation (100 marks per subject):
    • Written Lesson: 10 marks
    • Presentation: 60 marks/li>
    • Teacher Traits: 20 marks
    • Teaching Aids: 10 marks/li>
